‘It is the first book that I’ve ever read that gives a completely honest picture of how hard it is to accept that there is a problem, and that help is needed’

Elena Vanishing is a real life story of a young girl’s struggle overcoming anorexia, and how she tried and tried to break the cycle but her mindset keeps her trapped. Written by Elena’s mum, but through her thoughts and reflections she breaks the stigma surrounding this illness and how the reasons they occur are not always the easiest to share.

This books takes you through all the stages of this illness and her problems in finding a suitable treatment. It takes you through every part of emotional turmoil she faces, the self hatred she feels and her extreme view and attempts to find perfection. It is the first book that I’ve ever read that gives a completely honest picture of how hard it is to accept that there is a problem, and that help is needed.

The writing is superb in this collaborative effort. They explore all the issues in the family, self-esteem, depression, self-harm, OCD and a lot more on top of this demanding eating disorder.

It is very realistic. It uses characters from all parts of her life and shows how you lose touch with people around you when you face heart wrenching issues. The warning in the book highlights that this is not a way to live your life and should not be read if you are worried about the effect it may have on you.
